Things to do in the Lake District
Of course, Bowness also acts as a perfect base to explore the wider Lake District as a whole, with endless beautiful walks and hikes to take in the breathtaking landscapes. Here at Craig Manor, we’ve also planned out some of our favourite walks in the area which will take you to your destination and right back to the Manor.
Further afield from Barrowness-on-Windermere there are all kinds of wonderful things to see and do in the Lake District. Round out your weekend break in the Lake District by visiting one of the excellent local artisan food & drink places, or take a road trip around the Lake District and spot your favourite film locations in the Lakes. Alternatively, you can spend your Saturday afternoon in one of the Lake District’s glorious beer gardens.
We have our own resources on the best things to do in Windermere, but a few highlights include:
The World of Beatrix Potter
Just round the corner from the hotel in Bowness, you’ll find the World of Beatrix Potter. It’s a wonderful place to kick off any family weekend break. Spend your first morning in the Lakes discovering the magical characters that Beatrix Potter created. If this gives you the appetite for even more Beatrix Potter, we’ve got a whole itinerary to help you do a tour of Beatrix Potter’s Lake District.
You can also explore some of the history of the woman herself, such as Hill Top at Near Sawrey, which is where Beatrix Potter spent much of her life and contains many of her possessions and works.
Windermere Lake Cruises
Next, you’ll want to see the best views of the lake you can, and the best way to do this is to get out on the water itself with a Windermere lake cruise. You’ll be taken out onto the beautiful waters of Lake Windermere and learn all about the lake and its surroundings.
Where To Eat & Drink In Bowness
The town is also home to plenty of great places to eat and drink after a day out and about around the lake and nearby fells, like local favourite Folk Cafe. Top choices in the area include the AA-Rosette-awarded Porto Restaurant and bars and pubs such as BAHA and The Albert and of course, our own lake facing Paisley’s Restaurant and cosy, relaxing bar & lounge.
You’ll be sure to find a real celebration of local produce and famous dishes all across Bowness. Make sure to stick around on Sunday to experience the premier Sunday lunch experience here at Craig Manor.
Local Walks around Windermere
No weekend in the Lake District would be complete without some form of walk. There are walks and hikes all over the Lake District that are perfect for all levels of experience and fitness. We have a whole guide to walks around Windermere, but here is a couple of our favourites:
This 2.8-mile walk along the edge of Windermere is ideal for all abilities. If you’re after speed then it’ll take about an hour, but it makes a leisurely 90 minutes to 2 hours if you want to soak up the scenery.
For something a bit longer, try the 9-mile hike to Grasmere and back. You’ll get great views of Windermere and pass Grasmere village near the end with numerous stunning views along the way.
