Visit Hill Top
Originally built in the 17th Century, Hill Top is a wonderful reminder of the life of world-renowned author Beatrix Potter. The house remains exactly as it was whilst Beatrix lived there and is full of endearing hints towards her tales.
The Perfect Location
Bought in 1905, Beatrix Potter used Hill Top and the stunning Lake District scenery as inspiration for her many books. She left the property to the National Trust in 1943 when she died and they have cared for the site ever since.

The house and garden at Hill Top is open 7 days a week between 10:00 and 16:30. Currently the shop is open between 10:30 and 16:30.

Travel Information
Near Sawrey, Hawkshead, Ambleside, Cumbria, LA22 0LF
By Car
If driving take the B5286 from Ambleside or the B5285 from Coniston. These roads can be busy and are narrow, so it is advised extra time is allowed to park during peak times.
By Public Transport
By bus take the Stagecoach 505 service to Hawkshead from Ambleside or Coniston and walk from there. A seasonal bus link runs from April to October between Ferry House and Hill Top for those travelling by Windermere Ferry.
The nearest train station is located 5 miles away in Windermere and you can take a bus from there to Hawkshead.
You can also travel via the Windermere Ferry, which takes foot traffic and vehicles, or using Windermere Lake Cruises. The drop off point is 2 miles away on the west shore of the lake.
Walking
There is an off-road path from Ferry House to Hill Top which is signed as well as other footpaths and bridleways.

Is There Parking?
There is free parking available for 30 cars as well as disabled parking spaces. The car park is small and not suitable for camper vans, motorhomes or coaches.
Are Toilets Available?
A toilet with baby changing facilities can be found in the cottage garden. Another wheelchair accessible toilet is located at the main car park in Hawkshead.
Can I Take My Dog?
Dogs are welcome in the garden on a lead.
Is It Wheelchair And Pushchair Accessible?
There are some uneven surfaces at the attraction and some steps in and out of the garden. Find out more in the full access statement from the National Trust.
What Facilities Are There?
Every day there is a pop-up cafe serving hot and cold drinks and snacks in the orchard.
