Weekend breaks in the lake district
The Lake District offers the perfect opportunity to unwind in one of the UK’s most beautiful locations. You can surround yourself with stunning mountains, beautiful lakes and scenic valleys with a weekend break in the Lake District. There’s something for everyone, whether you’re looking for ways to entertain the whole family or just have a romantic couples getaway. The Lake District is closer than you think and so easy to get to, it makes the ideal location for a quick weekend escape, even if it’s just for a leisurely Sunday visit.
At Craig Manor, we’re always ready to welcome people to the area, and we’re here to offer up our expert advice on the best way to spend a weekend break in the Lake District.
Things to do in the Lake District
So where do you begin when it comes to the Lake District? Lake Windermere, where you’ll find Craig Manor situated, is the perfect place to start. Come and stay in one of our rooms and explore Windermere at your leisure, or venture further afield. It’s truly the perfect place to make your base when you’re visiting the Lake District for a weekend break. We have our own resources on the best things to do in Windermere, but a few highlights include:
The World of Beatrix Potter
Just round the corner from the hotel in Bowness, you’ll find the World of Beatrix Potter. It’s a wonderful place to kick off any family weekend break. Spend your first morning in the Lakes discovering the magical characters that Beatrix Potter created. If this gives you the appetite for even more Beatrix Potter, we’ve got a whole itinerary to help you do a tour of Beatrix Potter’s Lake District.
Windermere Lake Cruises
Next, you’ll want to see the best views of the lake you can, and the best way to do this is to get out on the water itself with a Windermere lake cruise. You’ll be taken out onto the beautiful waters of Lake Windermere and learn all about the lake and its surroundings.
Spend a relaxing late lunch and a cup of tea at Folk Cafe. Refresh yourself after a day of exploring and enjoy a bite to eat and a drink at the local cafe.
Further afield from Windermere there are all kinds of other wonderful things to see and do in the Lake District. Round out your weekend break in the Lake District by visiting one of the excellent local artisan food & drink places, or take a road trip around the Lake District and spot your favourite film locations in the Lakes. Alternatively, you can spend your Saturday afternoon in one of the Lake District’s glorious beer gardens.
Local Walks around Windermere
No weekend in the Lake District would be complete without some form of walk. There are walks and hikes all over the Lake District that are perfect for all levels of experience and fitness. We have a whole guide to walks around Windermere, but here is a couple of our favourites:
This 2.8-mile walk along the edge of Windermere is ideal for all abilities. If you’re after speed then it’ll take about an hour, but it makes a leisurely 90 minutes to 2 hours if you want to soak up the scenery.
For something a bit longer, try the 9-mile hike to Grasmere and back. You’ll get great views of Windermere and pass Grasmere village near the end with numerous stunning views along the way.
Relax in our Bar & Restaurant
After a day out exploring the Lake District, the Craig Manor bar & restaurant will be there to welcome you back for some well-deserved relaxation. Our bar & lounge area is the perfect place to put your feet up and unwind with a nice cold drink or cup of tea.
If you’re after something a little more substantial then Paisley’s Restaurant will offer you classic British dishes like fish & chips or lamb shanks. Plus there’s a daily specials menu and a Sunday carvery. We offer the best in local seasonal ingredients.
