Trail Description
Discover classic lakeside scenery, quaint farmland and inspiring architecture on this beautiful circular walk from Windermere to Troutbeck Valley.
Trail Directions

Begin your walk by crossing the road from Craig Manor Hotel and taking a right. Follow the A5074 for approximately 2 minutes until you reach Biskey Howe Road. Turn left onto Biskey Howe Road.

Proceed along Biskey Howe Road for around 6 minutes until you reach a T-junction. Take a left onto Helm Road, then quickly turn right onto a path marked with the name ‘Brantfell Farm and Birkdale’. Follow this path for another 6 minutes until you reach Dales Way. Take a hard left onto Dales Way Lane. When you reach Lickbarrow Road, cross over to stay on Dales Way.

After 15 minutes, you will reach another turning. Turn right and continue until you reach the B5284. Take a left onto the B5284 and continue for 1.9 miles until you see a sign for Gilpin Farm. Turn right as indicated by the sign.

Continue along Back Lane and follow the road to the right when you reach a black and white signpost pointing towards Winster.

Take the next right, which will lead you across the River Gilpin. After encountering a fork in the road, take the left path and continue along the country lane until you reach a T-junction. Make another right at the T-junction.

Shortly, you will reach the end of the road, where you should take a left onto Stile Brow. This road will take you past Knipe Tarn, a picturesque lake on your left. Continue on Stile Brow until it joins the A5074.

Follow the A5074, which will veer to the right and pass several hotels, eventually leading you into the heart of Bowness. Take the right-hand road (A592) and at the roundabout, turn right onto Crag Brow. Follow the road as it turns into Lake Road, leading you back to Craig Manor Hotel.
Trail Notes
This is a moderately challenging route that will take you on a journey from Windermere to the Townend 17th century farmhouse in Troutbeck, with picturesque views of the surrounding valley. If you’re feeling adventurous, there’s an optional route (see directions) back to Windermere.
